Rural populations in developing countries often face challenges in accessing digital services due to low literacy levels, limited internet connectivity, and language barriers. Traditional helpline systems based on voice calls and SMS services provide limited automation and scalability. Recent developments in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Natural Language Processing (NLP), Speech Recognition, and multilingual conversational systems have enabled the development of more accessible digital support platforms for rural communities. This review paper analyzes existing SMS-based and voice-based rural support systems, conversational AI platforms, multilingual communication technologies, and intelligent helpdesk architectures. The paper identifies major research gaps including lack of multilingual voice interaction, poor accessibility for low-literacy users, and limited AI integration in rural service delivery systems. Finally, the paper discusses future trends and opportunities in AI-assisted rural governance and digital inclusion.
